The Coevolutionary Approach to Nature-Based Solutions: Theoretical Concepts and Research Practices for Inclusive and Transformative NBS Design and Implementation

Over the course of the past four years, the COEVOLVERS project has established a novel perspective on Nature-based Solutions (NBS). We are pleased to extend an invitation to our colleagues—researchers, policy makers, and decision-makers—to participate in a series of engaging online symposia. Let us convene to explore innovative concepts and methods and stimulate substantive discussions that will advance our understanding and application of Nature-Based Solutions beyond the state of the art on following five themes:

The significance of semiotics in NBS co-creation (August 27, 13–15 CET)

Co-creation represents a method for fostering long-term collective behavioural change within multi-species communities. This symposium aims to investigate the roles of communication, meaning-making, and valuation in addressing complex challenges that involve humans and other species and their distinct needs for well- being.

Coevolutionary learning in NBS transformation (September 30, 13–15 CET)

Coevolutionary learning represents an experimental and experiential process that facilitates a transition from doubt to an updated belief system. This symposium seeks to examine, in depth, the ways in which transdisciplinary research initiatives can contribute to transformative change within multispecies communities.

Multispecies care (October 28, 13–15 CET)

Multispecies care embodies the principles of environmental ethics applied in both individual and community actions. This symposium aims to explore the complex dimensions of care within multispecies contexts, focusing on aesthetics, ethics, design, and the implementation of nature-based solutions.

Nature-based governance (November 25, 13–15 CET)

Nature-based governance relies on ecosocial functions, norms, and objectives, recognising the multiple values of nature. In this symposium, we examine how different humans and other species and their habitats can serve as governance agents in ecosocial recovery and how nature-based governance models can enhance sustainability transformation.

The symposia are scheduled to last two hours and will be structured into segments comprising three ten-minute presentations delivered by members of COEVOLVERS, each addressing a specific subtopic within a designated theme. This will be succeeded by commentaries from invited distinguished experts and discussion with the audience.

The symposia will be conducted online. Each session will be recorded and subsequently summarized in a report. These reports will be published as part of a specialized series entitled "COEVOLVERS Symposia Series" in the journal "Cultural Science: A Multi- disciplinary Journal of More-than-Human Culture."

Link to the registration form will be published here soon.
