On 5 March, 2024, a number of representatives of the core group attended the meeting at the municipal office of Velke Karlovice, including mayors across the border, forest managers, the department of the Environment of the NUTS 3 office in Zlín, the forest authority, local school, farmers, tourism, along with the CETIP and SlovakGlobe team.

The meeting was opened by Prof. Tatiana Kluvánková from SlovakGlobe by recalling the words of Plato: ‘You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation‘. She then introduced Ecopoly, a role board game, designed as an interactive simulation of resource dilemma. Ecopoly simulates both individual and collective decision-making in the management of common/community resources and the co-creation of nature-based solutions for long-term sustainability.

A diverse set of roles, including two non-human characters, explored gameplay moving from individual to collective behaviour, learning the effect of imposed rules, sanctions compared to self-governance along with a risk of uncertainty. Six Jolly Joker cards in “feet” of Non-humans increased the power of nature.

‘This game helped us to get to know each other better and understand the meaning of collaboration for the sustainability and climate resilience of our community’ declared several players in a post-game survey.

The Ecopoly simulation enhanced the discussion on NBS good practices, which were introduced during the November workshop. At the end of the meeting, the participants discussed their participation format for the Beskydy 2024 workshop scheduled for September 24–26, 2024.
